Walk into any furniture showroom in Delhi or Chandigarh and you will hear the same words: orthopaedic, premium foam, 7-zone, hotel comfort. They sound impressive. They also tell you almost nothing useful about whether the mattress on the floor is right for your back, your bedroom, or your partner.

This guide cuts past that. Six honest questions, in the order they matter, with no requirement that you end up choosing a Sparsh.

1. How do you actually sleep?

Your sleeping position decides the right mattress — side sleepers need softer tops, back sleepers need balanced support, stomach sleepers need firm surfaces

Your sleeping position decides more about the right mattress than any feature list.

2. Does your body weight match the mattress?

Body weight changes how a mattress feels even within the same model. A 5"-thick foam mattress that is "medium-firm" for a 60 kg sleeper will feel soft to a 90 kg sleeper because they sink deeper into the foam.

A reasonable rule:

3. Foam, spring, hybrid — what really differs?

Foam, spring, and hybrid mattresses each use different construction — the layers inside determine feel, durability, and price

Foam mattresses

Quiet, contouring, no metal, easier to move. Within "foam" sit several different materials, each with a real personality:

Spring mattresses

4. Climate matters more than you think

Across Punjab, Haryana and Delhi NCR, summer surface temperatures inside a closed bedroom can stay above 32°C for hours. Some materials cope; some don't.

5. Get the size right the first time

Mattress sizes in India are quoted in inches. The standard ones used across the country are:

Always measure the inner dimensions of your bed frame, not the outer. A King bed frame can take a Queen mattress in some designs, and the wrong size leaves an awkward gap or forces the mattress to bow.

The single most common buying mistake is picking a mattress to match the bed-frame label instead of the bed-frame measurement.

6. Set a real budget — and know what each level buys

A few honest tiers, in INR:

The 10-minute test

Whatever you shortlist, do this in the showroom:

  1. Lie down in your normal sleep position. Not sit. Not lean. Lie down.
  2. Stay for at least 8–10 minutes per side. The first 60 seconds tell you almost nothing.
  3. Slide a flat hand into the small of your back. If there is a gap, the mattress is too firm. If you cannot get your hand in, it is too soft.
  4. Roll over. If you have to "haul" yourself, the mattress will feel exhausting after a year.
  5. Ask the dealer to show you the spec sheet — foam density, spring count, warranty term. Specs you can verify beat marketing words you cannot.

One last thing

The best mattress in the world will fail on a sagging bed-frame. Before buying, check that your frame is flat, that the gap between slats is no more than 7 cm, and that any storage box underneath has a solid ply top. A good frame is the cheapest upgrade you can give a mattress.
